Two
millenniums of stormy history have been written
on the this small island situated between the
gentle hills and fertile plain on the mainland
and the coast of the island Ciovo. It's first
pages were written long ago by the Illyrians,
Greeks and Romans who built the town; it was continued
in the 7th century by the Croats, who developed
their autonomous municipality, whether under their
own or foreign sovereigns (the Byzantine Empire,
Hungary, Venice, France, Austria) into one of
the most beautiful towns on the Adriatic coast.
The town is a museum of art with relics from Ancient
Kairos, Roman artefacts and early Croatian art
which will keep your attention. You will be enchanted
by the Romanesque portal of the master Radovan,
and admire the Gothic and Renaissance masterpieces
of Gojkovic, Alesi, Duknovic and Nikola Firentinac.
You will also be captivated by the beauty of the
cathedral, the mystique of the streets and vaults,
the beauty and colour of the paintings, miniatures
and carvings. In the serenity of the museums,
treasures, art collections and old libraries,
and stone monuments, you will follow the continuity
of living and man's creativity in this climate
where the sun and sea have merged to create this
beautiful town. |
